Second Thursday Fiction Workshop

  • Cuyahoga County Public Library -- South Lyndhurst Branch (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

IN PERSON. For fiction writers ready to offer and receive feedback.

Writing can be lonely work. It’s the glare of a computer screen or the scratch of a pen across an empty page. And how do you know whether a story is working? At some point, it’s time to share.

Consider us your sounding board. Our fiction workshop will meet once a month for six months to offer and receive feedback. Each time we gather, a selection of group members will present writing, so participants must commit to reading up to 30 pages ahead of our meetings.

We’ll talk about where the story comes alive, and why, and unpack your questions, so when you return to the draft alone at your desk, you’ll feel energized, fresh-eyed, and hopefully, inspired.

Please commit to attending at least five of the six classes in order to help create this generous and supportive community. Space is limited and registration is required. Learn more HERE.

So You Want to Write a Memoir?

So You Want to Write a Memoir?

Everyone has a memoir inside of them, but sometimes it takes a little support and prodding to help us bring our truth to the page. In this workshop, we’ll discover how to tap into vulnerability, heartache, love, and loss to share the stories only we can tell.

So You Want to Write a Memoir? Maybe you’ve drafted a handful of chapters. Maybe you jot down notes on your phone or scribble lists on a sketchpad in your car. Maybe you already have the photo picked out for your book jacket. Now what? How do you actually write the book?

Planning, pitching, and publishing a memoir can be lonely work, but it is also absolutely do-able and wonderfully rewarding. In this workshop, we’ll get moving on our memoirs. We’ll jumpstart creative juices and put ourselves on the path to success.

Each week, we’ll study one facet of memoir and apply that technique in our own storytelling. In addition to generating new material, everyone will leave this workshop with a sample book proposal and the inspiration needed to write the stories only you can tell.

ONLINE. Tuesdays, 7PM ET/ 4PM PT. Learn more and sign up HERE.

Wild Precious Writing in Chautauqua: Tell the Stories Only YOU Can Tell

Nourish your practice and come wild write with us!

We’ll put pens on the page in order to move past ego and self-doubt and all the voices that tell us we’re not enough. This is a workshop where we write, but it’s not a writing workshop. We’re not critiquing one another’s work or giving feedback. We’re simply generating new work together, lifting each other up, and sharing the truths that only surface when we get out of our own way. Wild Precious Writing -- Stanford Continuing Studies (Open to Everyone)

Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

—Mary Oliver

For many of us, the answer is, “I want to write,” to capture our truth in words and fulfill the promise of our imaginations. But while we may have essays or novels brewing in our minds and notes piling up on our phones, it’s hard to find time to do the work.

This online course will move you forward toward that goal. For two hours a week, you will embrace your “one wild and precious life,” pursuing projects that compel you and making progress on your writing. Before each class, you’ll write for 20 minutes in response to an open-ended prompt—perhaps Ada Limón’s instructions on perseverance, Naomi Shihab Nye’s guidance on drafting the desired world into being, or Andrea Gibson’s encouragement to “write ourselves breathless.” In weekly 90-minute sessions, you’ll push beyond that initial prompt, engaging with mentor texts, exploring craft techniques, and sharing work to discover where it shines and sings.

From poetry to prose, micro to memoir, this course is designed for writers at any stage looking to jumpstart their practice and write with joy and freedom. You’ll leave with a dozen drafted pieces and a renewed sense of what draws you to the page, learning how to make writing easier, more fun, and manageable—even on the busiest days. Learn more and register HERE.

**Note: Live sessions will be held from 7-8:30 PM Pacific (10-11:30 EST), but all sessions will be recorded and available to everyone.

Class runs July 10-August 7.
